history
Vignoble Gitton is a family-owned estate founded in 1945 by Marcel and Huguette Gitton with just half a hectare of vines. Over three generations, the domaine has grown to around 33 hectares across Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and Coteaux du Giennois. Today, Pascal and Denise Gitton, together with their daughter Chanel, craft authentic, terroir-driven wines that highlight the diversity of Sancerre’s limestone and flint soils. Each parcel is vinified separately, reflecting the estate’s long-standing commitment to precision, tradition, and the pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc.
Vineyard
The “Les Romains” site sits over a flinty soil layer (silex) above the Oxfordian limestone base. The steep slope and elevation contribute to slow, even ripening and pronounced minerality
Winemaking
Grapes are harvested mechanically, followed by pneumatic pressing and cold settling (débourbage). Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with native yeasts, and the wine is aged for 9 to 10 months in 600 L French oak barrels.
Tasting notes
“Les Romains” offers a delicate, stony nose with subtle fruit notes. On the palate, it is fresh and restrained, with a long, dry, mineral finish that echoes its flinty origins.
Food pairing
This cuvée is a natural match for shellfish, grilled fish, and goat cheese, especially the signature Crottin de Chavignol. It also pairs well with lighter poultry and vegetable dishes that highlight freshness.
